Check digits are calculated using the standard GS1 Modulo 10 algorithm with alternating weights of 3 and 1 right-to-left. Vector SVG barcodes generated here are free to download and print.

How the GS1 Check Digit Algorithm Works

Every GS1 GTIN (GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, GTIN-14) and SSCC code ends with a single check digit. This digit is calculated using a Modulo 10 algorithm to catch 99% of data entry and scanner reading errors.

The Modulo 10 Formula Step-by-Step

  1. Start from the rightmost data digit (position immediately before the check digit) and move left.
  2. Multiply alternating digits by 3 and 1.
  3. Sum all the weighted products.
  4. Subtract the total sum from the next higher multiple of 10. The result is the check digit: (10 - (Sum mod 10)) mod 10.

If a barcode scanner reads a single digit incorrectly, the weighted sum fails the Modulo 10 check, preventing wrong products from being scanned at retail checkout or warehouse dispatch.

Best Practices for Barcode Printing on Production Lines

  • Maintain quiet zones. Leave at least 5 module widths of clear blank space to the left and right of the barcode bars.
  • Ensure high optical contrast. Black bars on a clean white background provide the highest scan rate. Avoid printing red bars (red laser scanners cannot read red ink).
